I just bought components and built a new PC at home. And I decided to go for Vista because it felt a bit more future-safe… Anyway most worked without a problem but I got really frustrated when I realized I could not create a toolbar with My Computer and put it at the top of the screen. But just found out through some googling that its possible but some what not obvious…

Recover and rip a damaged dvd from a videocamera

In March when we went to Val Thorens with UCPA the guide filmed us a lot and then we got the DVD but it was damaged and it wasn’t finalized. So I did an attempt to save some parts of the video and here is what I did and used.

First it was not easy to get a good ISO or extract the vob-files from the disc. I tried several tools:

  • dvdisaster could extract an iso from the dvd but I did not find a good tool to extract the vob-files since the iso was damaged it was not possible to open or mount as a normal ISO. Though it seems that if you have a registered version of ISOBuster it should be possible because I saw it could find the files from the damaged ISO.
  • CDRoller manages both to read the disc and extract damaged vob-files though you need to register to actual be able to save the files.

But now I had either an ISO or a couple of damaged VOB files. I noticed VLC was the best player to use to play the damaged VOB file and it showed quickly that it was not so much damaged.

Another great tool to quickly check all that could be able to recover was to use VobEdit and the preview function in there, but I was not able to use VobEdit to extract any mpgs or so from the VOB file. It showed much more video than VLC and it was basically all that I could later extract.

DGIndex which is part of DGMPGDec generates both a d2v or m2v and ac3 file.  So need to use ac3tool to make it into wav file and then TMPGEnc to make it into a mpg file.

Another tools that could extract a corrected VOB-file from the corrupted VOB-file was Vobrator.

Either if you go via an mpg file or a corrected VOB file you can then use Auto Gordian Knot to convert it into a DivX avi-file.

Fotoböcker

Jag har länge varit sugen på att testa och skriva ut en del av mina foton i en fotobok. Än har det inte blivit av men tänkte iaf spara en länk till den sammanställning GöteborgsPosten gjorde nyligen över olika svenska tryckerier. Har även tittat på Blurb innan också men inte testat. Men någon gång blir det förhoppningsvis av…

Beställde dock MiniCards från Moo precis vilket jag också funderat länge på.

Stop iPhone from backin up everything on Windows

I sync my iPhone both on the work laptop and on the PC at home. At home I have all my music and podcast subscriptions while on the work laptop I have my calendar and a huge address book. Though since 2.0 the iPhone backups all files and this has started to take really long time. Since I only sync the calendar and the address book with the work laptop there is no real need to make a backup there as well. But there is not option in iTunes…

How to upgrade wordpress

Download the latest version of WordPress Automatic Upgrade into your wp-content/plugins directory.

Unzip it:
unzip wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.2.2.zip

You could try to go to the Plugin page of your WordPress Admin login and start the Automatic upgrade but for me it failed until I changed the file permissions. Go to your wordpress install directory and do:
chmod -R 777 *

Then I started it and gave it the FTP permissions but once more it fails to create some files in wpau-backup. I did:
touch index.php
touch index.html
chmod 777 *

Then I coudl go on to the next step but once more it fails, now to write the backup file. I get:

Go back to the plugin section of the Admin interface and the click “Click Here to Automatically Upgrade WordPress to latest Version.” at the top to start over again. The plugin claims that “Seems you have not completed the clean up process from last upgrade. Please click here to run the clean up process before continuing”. Go on and clean up. Then just follow the steps as they come and all should work just fine.

Once all is done you want to revert file permission, so do:
chmod -R 644 *
find . -type d -exec chmod uog+x {} \;

Done!

Ny lins?

Har funderat en hel del på om jag skall köpa en telezoom och Canons 70-200 linser har fått väldigt fina betyg, speciellt 4.0 linserna. Helst skulle jag vilja ha med bildstabilisering men det är rätt mycket dyrare. Tittade dock på fotosidan och på blocket och det finns rätt gott om just 70-200/4L linser, och några få med bild stabilisering. Man verkar kunna köpa de utan stabilisering från ca 4000 kr.

Så för jämförelse skull tittade jag på priserna på B&H photo and video i New York. De tar ca 560 dollar för 70-200/4l linsen. Så vad blir det här hemma i Sverige? Jo upptäckte att Tullverket har en trevlig kalkylator som hjälper dig att räkna ut kostnaden. Enda luriga var att hitta tullavgiften för kameraobjektiv. Tullens varukod för kameraobjektiv är 9002 och denna kategori var sedan uppdelad i flera beroende på brännvidd men alla har en tullsats på 6.7% vad jag kunde se. Så att importera en 70-200/4L skulle kosta ca 5100 kr vilket är bra mycket billigare än tex Cyberphotos 7000 kr. Importpriset för en med bildstabilisering blir ca 9100 kr. Ny pris i sverige lite över 11 000 kr.
