I brought my Holux M-241 on our last hike in the Swedish mountains and wanted to use the tracks to geotag all photos. So when I got home I used the Holux Utility software to download all tracks. Worked fine and I uploaded all to WikiLoc but when then to geocode all the images in Ligthroom I tried to use Jeffrey Friedls GeoEncoding plugin but realised it couldn’t handle the kml files. After some fiddling around I found out that the timestamps where missing in the kml files.
After some googling I found out what options to use on GPSBabel to get it working. It was mentioned here.
gpsbabel -p “” -w -i gnav_trl -f “OLDFILE.trl” -o gpx -F “NEWFILE.gpx”
So using those options with all the different trl-files I got from the unit I managed to create one gpx file that Jeffrey’s excellent plugin could manage. Then I used Jeffrey’s other plugin to upload all the photos to Flickr where they can be viewed on a map!
Next time I’ll try to use the built in functionality of GPSBabel to download data directly from the Holux M-241. In the same thread it was mentioned one should do:
Windows (if on COM10): gpsbabel -t -r -w -i m241 -f COM10 -o gpx -F data.gpx
though have not tried it yet.

In March when we went to Val Thorens with UCPA the guide filmed us a lot and then we got the DVD but it was damaged and it wasn’t finalized. So I did an attempt to save some parts of the video and here is what I did and used.
First it was not easy to get a good ISO or extract the vob-files from the disc. I tried several tools:
- dvdisaster could extract an iso from the dvd but I did not find a good tool to extract the vob-files since the iso was damaged it was not possible to open or mount as a normal ISO. Though it seems that if you have a registered version of ISOBuster it should be possible because I saw it could find the files from the damaged ISO.
- CDRoller manages both to read the disc and extract damaged vob-files though you need to register to actual be able to save the files.
But now I had either an ISO or a couple of damaged VOB files. I noticed VLC was the best player to use to play the damaged VOB file and it showed quickly that it was not so much damaged.
Another great tool to quickly check all that could be able to recover was to use VobEdit and the preview function in there, but I was not able to use VobEdit to extract any mpgs or so from the VOB file. It showed much more video than VLC and it was basically all that I could later extract.
DGIndex which is part of DGMPGDec generates both a d2v or m2v and ac3 file. So need to use ac3tool to make it into wav file and then TMPGEnc to make it into a mpg file.
Another tools that could extract a corrected VOB-file from the corrupted VOB-file was Vobrator.
Either if you go via an mpg file or a corrected VOB file you can then use Auto Gordian Knot to convert it into a DivX avi-file.

17-20 april i år ordnar Storulvån och Sylarna Fjällfest. Det rycktas att även M.A.S.C, mountain and snowkite competition skall gå av stapeln då. Kanske man skulle satsa på att åka upp en sväng då.

Någon gång har jag hört att en människa avger lika mycket värme som ett element. Surfade runt lite på sovsäckar igår och hittade på haglöfs hemsida om den nya test standarden för sovsäckar att en person avger mellan 70-100W vilket i så fall inte alls är närheten av ett element som ligger på ca 1000W. Så då blev man ju lite fundersam och undrar vad som gäller?
Men tack o lov så blev man räddad av ett av Professor Grimvalls mini problem i NyTeknik, Varmhjärtad gäst – Ny Teknik. En bra tumregel som står där är att en person avger ca 1W per kilogram vikt. Så 70-100W är ju högst rimiligt. Det som är intressant är att den nya test standarden utgår man från en värme produktion på 60W. På Haglöfs sida om test standarden anser de att det är lågt tilltaget men det är ju inte ovanligt med tjejer på ca 60 kg.

Satt och läste forumet på Dykarna.nu och hittade “Anodisering av aluminium hemma i källaren“. Inte för jag vet vad för aluminium pryl jag skall färga in just nu men det kan alltid vara bra och ha koll på att man kan göra det själv eftersom aluminium är relativt lättarbetad metall. I sista inlägget fanns tips på ett svenskt företag, AluPart samt en utförlig amerikansk artikel om hur man gör.
